Public Outrage
Korean netizens are expressing disgust and outrage after rapper Bassagong was released from prison for illegally filming and distributing intimate images of his ex-girlfriend. Images and videos of a celebration held to mark his release have sparked a heated backlash.
Celebration Sparks Controversy
On April 12, pictures of the gathering appeared on online forums, showing Bassagong smiling and receiving congratulations from friends and family. The rapper was even presented with a traditional gift of tofu, symbolizing a new beginning.
Netizens’ Disdain
However, the public response was far from celebratory. Social media users criticized the celebration, questioning its appropriateness and highlighting the severity of Bassagong’s crime.
“Why record and broadcast such an event?” one user asked sarcastically. “He’s been jailed for a sex crime, and they’re filming a release celebration? Ridiculous.”
“Only the victim deserves our sympathy,” another user commented.
Bassagong’s Conviction
In 2018, Bassagong was arrested and convicted for recording intimate parts of his then-girlfriend while she was asleep. He shared these recordings in a private group chat. He was sentenced to one year in prison, ordered to undergo sexual violence therapy, and banned from working in certain facilities for three years.
Appeal and Album Release
Bassagong attempted to appeal the verdict, but his appeal was dismissed. Despite his imprisonment, he released a ten-track album in February, which he wrote and composed himself.
